Guitars, like everything else, cost a lot more than they used to. Even Epiphone, once the preserve of the budget buyer, now regularly releases special edition and signature model guitars that cost nearly as much as Gibsons used to.
All of which is to say that, when shopping through your Black Friday guitar deals, it’s worth keeping an eye out for a rare example of when you can nab something with the right name on the headstock for a similar price to an import version.
Enter then, the Gibson Les Paul Standard 50s in lovely Sparkling Burgandy finish. This guitar is every bit a USA Gibson with all of the pristine appointments you’d expect from a Les Paul Standard.

There’s the classic mahogany body with maple cap with off-white binding, and a bound rosewood board with trapezoid inlays leading up to that iconic headstock replete with the Gibson logo, and six classic green-buttoned Kluson tuners.
Under the hood you get a pair of Gibson’s PAF-inspired Burstbucker pickups, wired up with Orange Drop capacitors, and you get an aluminum tune-o-matic bridge and tailpiece too. It’s a proper, full-fat Gibson Les Paul Standard.
And with Thomann’s killer Black Friday deals, this guitar will cost you approximately nine quid less than the most expensive Asian-made Epiphone guitar in the company’s catalogue, the admittedly rather lovely 1963 Firebird V.
It’s also less than £200 more than the much-discussed Epiphone Kirk Hammett “Greeny” 1959 Les Paul Standard – but it actually says Gibson on that open-book headstock. Which would you rather take to a gig, really?
It’s a saving of £295 over the standard price of this guitar, and its finish is also a little bit outside of the norm without being too over the top – who wants to fit in anyway? All things considered, it’s a serious deal, so get it while you can.
