Noel Gallagher thinks there are benefits to him not being a guitar virtuoso.
In a new video for Gibson, taken from the Oasis guitarist’s Icons interview last year, he considers the impact of widely-available YouTube guitar tutorials and the rise of internet virtuosos. He acknowledges the fact that he wouldn’t have had access to anything of that as he got into making music, but if he had gone down that route, Oasis wouldn’t have been what they were.
“There’s tons out there for people to be great. But I think what’s more prevalent now is you fucking see really great guitarists – there are shows on YouTube with guys signed from rooms like they were born in Nashville, do you know what I mean? All that stuff,” Gallagher says.
“And my lad will say ‘You can’t play guitar like that,’ and I’m like ‘Thank the fucking Lord!’ because if I could play guitar like that, you know what I’d be doing right now? Playing guitar like that. That’s what I’d be doing. I wouldn’t be going [sings the first word of Live Forever] ‘Maybeeeee…’ You can’t go anywhere with that.”
The simplicity of Oasis forms part of their charm, and Gallagher has also recently explained that it relates to his songwriting process too. In a recent video posted to X/Twitter, he says: “I’ve go no control over the music I make. I’m not adept enough as a musician to go into a studio and say, ‘I want to make a fucking jazz album. I can’t do that. All I can do is sit with a guitar and wait in hope for something to happen. And that’s what I do now.
“I call it going fishing… I sit by the river, with the guitar and if I get a catch, great! And that’s what I do, it comes from within.”
