Neural DSP has issued a firmware update for its compact-yet-mighty Nano Cortex amp modeller, and it’s set to free what was once a fixed signal chain from its shackles.

The update, NanOS 2.0.0, not only introduces a customisable signal chain, but also 47 new effects and utilities, plus new workflow tools. Neural DSP says it transforms the Nano Cortex into a “fully featured, all-in-one guitar and bass rig”.

The Nano Cortex arrived in September last year, following a series of bizarre (and very lengthy) teaser videos that left the internet perplexed, to say the least. Despite the backlash, it certainly got everyone talking about the launch, which officially introduced this palm-sized version of its larger Quad Cortex sibling.

Though designed to be easy to use and branded as beginner-friendly, the Nano Cortex left out some key features – we scored it 9/10 in our review, but we noted that the biggest pitfall was indeed its fixed signal chain with a very limited palette of onboard effects taken from the former unit, and only a single amp capture in each preset. This meant building sounds using multiple captures of amps and dirt pedals and the various onboard effects was not viable with this model.

Now, you’ll get a whole bunch of new effects to experiment with thanks to the update. To name just a handful, there are three new EQs, eight new compressors – including additions like the Legendary 87 (M), based on Universal Audio 1176, or the Solid State Comp (ST), based on SSL Bus – plus four new wahs, and nine new guitar overdrives based on greats from the likes of Fulltone, Ibanez, Boss, and more. Each device or effect is designed to work in specific pre- or post-effect slots within the signal chain.

“As a musician, you never stop evolving. Neither do we,” says Francisco Cresp, Neural DSP Co-Founder. “NanOS 2.0.0 is our answer to everything players have asked for and more. This is your tone, your way, with no compromises.”

To show off the new features arriving with the NanOS 2.0.0 update in all their glory, Neural DSP has brought together artists Cory Wong, Henrik Linder, and Jack Gardiner for a performance video, filmed atop the Matterhorn in Zermatt. Powered entirely by the Nano Cortex, a USB battery pack, and portable speakers, “the track vividly demonstrates what this all-in-one rig is capable of”, according to the brand. Take a look below:

The Nano Cortex is available for $549 USD/€569 EUR through select dealers. NanOS 2.0.0 is free to existing users. To find out more head over to Neural DSP.
